Text with images

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The Online Photographer had an article or two about captions under pictures. The subject is still rattling around in my mind – it’s something I haven’t quite come to terms with. On the one hand, some images really stand out on their own. On the other, sometimes images are just lost without text.

Take this image, for example (screenshot with surrounding text):

This came from one of Pictory’s recent blog posts (here, specifically). On its own, the image doesn’t mean much to me. An older lady spending some time with a hobby, perhaps. Some focused light and nice, deep shadows. But with the text, it turns into a human story, and gives a new meaning: in this case, it screams of loneliness and abandonment.

It’s quite a sad image. Yet there is an uplifting message, that you make your own happiness.

This would be lost without the text.

In your situation, would you have done anything different?

The making of Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth, detail

Sweet Tooth, detail

The pic above is one of many moderately successful photos that I made very recently.  The entire concept really came together pretty well, mostly courtesy of my wife. See, the original thought was to embed the tooth in a cupcake.   Click to continue »

Real-life mermaids

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

When on the Big Island of Hawaii, I have always done boat diving with Jack’s Diving Locker.  Just a small lead in to some cool pics: search for the “Mermaids in our pool” pics (the direct link may not work – dunno?).

People who know me, know how much I miss the islands – the water, the sun, the laid-back approach.  Now I’m jealous – to have but a short opportunity to photograph with real mermaids.

Not gonna happen anytime soon, I’m afraid.

Then and Now

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Some people have noticed that we recently had a dump of snow in mid-April, and it appears that they think that this is late in the year for such antics.  It isn’t late: it’s not all that unusual, in fact.  The subject did cause me to think back, wondering what it was like last year at this time.

In retrospect, I suppose it’s not that different from now.  We still have snow on the same trails, but only slightly more.  The streets are about as bare as last year, perhaps slightly less. Click to continue »

The Tax Man Cometh

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Don’t fear the Tax Man. Fearing his auditors? That’s OK.

In a couple of days, those of us with U.S. Citizenshipt (and U.S. residents) we will get the privilege of paying for the service that government provides. It is traditional for most of us to bitterly complain about this, for it always hurts to see one’s money wasted away on the bureaucracy.

Every year, I think of a man.  I do not know this man, mind you.  My father spoke of him (OK, fine, I don’t remember who he said it about).  That man always paid his full amount of taxes. Never a deduction, never a credit.  Full amount, always.

He considered it a privilege to pay his taxes.  A privilege to live in this country, to pay for roads, and schools, and police, and fire departments, and libraries, and emergency services.

Yes, it could be argued that we’re also blowing wads of money on two wars and Obamacare (sorry, you’re already paying for the uninsured – just ask Mitt Romney, he admits it.  He just doesn’t like *how* the new Health Care bill covers the people).  But we’ve always blown giant wads of cash on meaningless endeavors.  Today is no different.

Given a choice, I’d rather that we all thought just a little bit more like the man in my memory.

A note on CostCo printing

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

As mentioned in a post the other day, we did some low-quality prints for my daughter. I suppose I should have mentioned: after my previous review putting CostCo down as a poor print shop, I want to re-emphasize: CostCo just doesn’t do it.

What I’m seeing: I really spiked up the colors & vivid settings before printing. Hey, a five-year-old likes colors, right? So I did this, and made everything nice & bright. When getting them back: just as before, the colors were slightly off and (more importantly) everything was much, much *darker*. To the point that you lost details in the shadows.

So, as mentioned the other day: acceptable quality for a five-year-old. Not acceptable to me. Kinda the last straw; gonna avoid them in the future…

Taking photos with your small child

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The title may be misleading. I don’t mean taking photos of your kids, but with them. As in: go on a photowalk. You might be surprised what you get – for example, this: Click to continue »
